The make/model of the policyholder’s vehicle and their driving record, where the vehicle resides and how many miles it is driven, as well as the cost of medical care and litigation in the policyholder’s state, are among the factors which impact the cost of an auto insurance policy, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

“Auto insurance premiums are calculated using many factors — and some insurers give more weight to some factors than others,” according to I.I.I. “The cost of an auto insurance policy is generally determined by the amount of coverage, types of coverage chosen and other factors.”

Regulators in 47 states also allow auto insurers to use credit-based insurance scores as a rating criterion.
